This love calculator uses the Pythagorean system of numerology, the most widely used version in English-speaking countries. In that system every letter of the alphabet has a number from 1 to 9, and a person’s name and birth date are turned into a small set of core numbers. The calculator works out those numbers for both people, compares them and combines the comparisons into one percentage. Here is each step in plain language.
Step one: turn letters into numbers
Each letter is given the value in the table below. The values run from 1 to 9 and then start again, so A, J and S are all worth 1, and B, K and T are all worth 2.

Step two: work out three name numbers
From each person’s name the calculator finds three numbers. Your Expression number, sometimes called the Destiny number, comes from adding every letter in your full name and is said to describe your natural talents and how you go about things. Your Soul Urge number, also called the Heart’s Desire, comes from adding only the vowels and is said to describe what you want deep down. Your Personality number comes from adding only the consonants and is said to describe the impression you make on others. Each total is added down to a single digit, so 34 becomes 3 plus 4, which is 7.
Vowels are A, E, I, O and U. The letter Y counts as a vowel only when no other vowel sits next to it, as in Mary, Lynn or Dylan, and as a consonant when it does, as in Kay, Wyatt or Yuri. Accents and punctuation are ignored, so Jose and the accented spelling give the same numbers, and spaces and hyphens simply separate the parts of a name.
Step three: work out your Life Path number (optional)
If you add both birth dates, the calculator also finds each person’s Life Path number, which is the number traditionally linked to your direction in life. The month, the day and the year are each reduced to a single digit and then added together and reduced again. Step four: keep the master numbers
In numerology the numbers 11, 22 and 33 are called master numbers, and they are not reduced further when they appear. You will see them written in your results as 11/2, 22/4 and 33/6. The first number is the master number itself, and the second is its everyday root, which the calculator uses when it compares you with your partner.
Step five: compare the numbers and build the percentage
For each pair of matching numbers, such as the two Soul Urge numbers, the calculator looks up how well those two numbers traditionally get on and gives the pair a rating from 2 for needs effort to 5 for natural flow. The ratings follow the commonly cited pairings in Western numerology, shown in the chart further down this page. Numerologists do not all agree on every pairing, so these ratings are our reading of the tradition, not a universal law.
The ratings are then combined with different weights. With birth dates, Life Path and Soul Urge each count for 30 percent of the score, Expression for 25 percent and Personality for 15 percent. Without birth dates, Soul Urge counts for 40 percent, Expression for 35 percent and Personality for 25 percent.
