What is Leadership?

Leadership in an organization is the ability of the management of a company to set and attain challenging goals, take quick and decisive action when required, outplay the present market competition, and motivate others to give their best possible performance.

According to Keith Davis, “Leadership is the ability to persuade others to seek defined objectives enthusiastically. It is the human factor which binds a group together and motivates it towards goals.”

Leadership is the ability to direct, lead, and impact other people’s behavior towards the realization of their goals in work/studies. Leadership is known as the potential of a manager (or team leader or a boss of any hierarchy level) to motivate his/her employees or team members to accomplish their visions with confidence and passion.

Characteristics of Leadership:

  • It is an interactive process in which a business owner influences and guides his/her employees towards accomplishing the goals.
  • Leadership requires some qualities to be there in a person, such as maturity, talent, and pleasing personality.
  • It is a team-driven process. It needs two/more people doing interact with one another.
  • A leader’s qualities include defining and molding the team’s behavior in the direction of the organization’s achievement of goals.
  • Leadership depends on the situation and circumstances. There is not any mainly designed way of being a leader or of practicing Leadership. It entirely depends on your style of taking care of the situation.  

Importance of Leadership

Leadership is the essential part of management, through which efficiency is maximized, and organizational goals are accomplished.

The importance of Leadership in management is explained as follows:

Initiates action: A leader begins the work by interacting with the subordinates and explaining the work strategies and process of the work to the subordinates.

Motivation: Motivation is a process that begins, guides, and maintains goal-related behaviors. It is that thing which appeals to you to take action, whether it might be to bring a glass of water to quench your thirst or to listen to songs. A team leader or boss motivates his/her employees by telling them about the awards they will get if they give their best performance in work. And in this way, the result is done smoothly and correctly. If the employees are well motivated, they will have high self-esteem and work faster and do hard work. They will be inspired to have result-oriented and health-oriented behaviors. Motivated people have higher efficiency in their work. They will take action for a specific job in a particular direction. Motivation increases the well-being and happiness of the employees. Thus, happier employees will perform better. And, this is the result of good Leadership. Good leaders produce motivated employees, and in turn, they give good works, and the employee productivity of the office/ the business will be higher.

Creating confidence: Try to instill self-confidence among the employees. Self-confidence is an essential factor that can be attained by explaining the employees’ respective work duties and job roles. Tell them that they should put in lots of effort into their work, and they should also follow the guidelines well so that they would be able to achieve their goals. Self-confidence means you accept and believe in your skills, talents, and potential in anything/everything of your life. Confidence is a quality that everyone would want to possess. If a leader can instill self-confidence among his subordinates, then he is called a good leader. Because self-confident employees will perform well in work, and as a result, that will increase the yields and revenue of the organization. Self-confidence means keeping faith in yourself. If you remain happy and stay with a feeling of well-being, confidence will come naturally to you. And you will need to maintain that attribute of confidence within you. So that you can display confidence whenever required, in any situation of your life. Self-confidence comes from acceptance of the body and the mind, .i.e. your self-esteem, and trusting your skills, talents, abilities, potentials, and experiences. Always be kind to yourself. Practicing self-compassion leads you to attain higher self-confidence to give the best performances in every task of your life and thus achieve your goals.

Building morale: Morale means the eager co-operation of your subordinates for their work, bringing them self-confidence and wining their faith in you as their leader and the organization as a whole. A team leader of a group can be a morale improver by attaining an entire association with his/her subordinates by interacting well with them to extract work from them and help them achieve their goals and the company’s goals as a whole. Thus, after they attain good morale, the employees will be able to perform to the best of their potential, as the team members work together to accomplish their goals.

Builds work environment: The role of management is to get work done by its employees. So, there is an excellent role of Leadership in management. The leaders of the company need to create an efficient work environment. A systematic work environment in a workplace will help in the company’s continuous, stable, and good growth. A good leader should have well enough interpersonal relations with his/her employees. He/she should listen to the problems in his/her subordinates’ lives and try to solve those problems. Keeping in mind humanitarian relations, he/she should treat them as he/she would himself/herself want to be treated. That means the leaders should not think as if the employees are machines and have no emotions. The leader should try to be empathetic towards the team members of the organization. Then only the employees will agree to the fact that he/she is a good and efficient enough leader for them. He/she should share their feelings and be compassionate to the employees. The leader can be strict, but at the same time, he/she should be friendly with the subordinates. If the leaders behave in this way with the associates, they will also be nice and polite towards their leaders and will not talk behind his/her back. The employees will openly discuss their problems of professional life and personal life with their manager. And, maybe you, as a manager, can give some solutions to their problems in private life, or you can surely solve their problems in professional life. You can also help them with their work at the workplace, i.e. you can tell them how to carry out a particular job and achieve the goals.

Work environment

Co-ordination: Co-ordination can be attained by reuniting the goals of the organization with your interests. This synchronism can be accomplished by proper and productive synchronization. And, this should be the primary goal of a leader.

Roles of a leader

  • Leadership is required at all levels of management: Leadership is a purpose that is important in every level of control. In the higher levels of management, it is necessary for achieving co-operation in creating the methodology of various rules and regulations, plans, and policies for the organization. It is essential to analyze and implement the company’s rules and regulations, goals, and policies at the mid-level and lower level. Leadership can be carried out effectively by giving training and guiding the subordinates when implementing the plans and procedures.

Workplace training to the employees by the leaders of the organizations is essential due to the following reasons:

  • When the employees of an organization are given workplace training, they can expand their knowledge and abilities and perform more effectively in their jobs.
  • Taking training could also increase the chances of promotion of the employees. While advancing yourself at work through training, you can also have a feeling of accomplishment, giving you motivation and more job satisfaction.
  • Workplace training for employees in companies is an efficient method of improving workplace productivity by boosting employee productivity and maintaining the pre-specified standards for achieving the goals of the organization. Well-trained workers have less probability of making mistakes and more likelihood of working with greater efficiency in their jobs by being more skilled.

Representative of the organization: A leader/manager/boss is known as the company’s representative. His work represents the enterprise at various seminars, conferences (national/international), workshops, meetings, etc. He/she needs to explain the business’s principles, vision, and mission to the specific audience and public. He/she also represents the department of which he/she is the leader.

What is leadership management

Combines and reconciles the personal interests with the goals of the organization: A manager, through his/her leadership traits, reconciles or combines the personal goals or interests of the employees (or his/her subordinates) with the purposes of the organization. He/she makes efforts to co-ordinate the work improvements of the employees with the organizational goals. He/she coordinates the actions of the sub-ordinates towards a common goal, and as a result, his/her team and he/she as a team leader together achieve their objectives/goals for the company and themselves. This can only be possible if he/she can motivate the employees well enough and get their co-operation and interest for the attainment of the goals of the organization.

A leader solicits support: A leader/a manager is a person who manages the entire teamwork by inviting collaboration and support of his/her co-ordinates. A leader can accomplish this through his experience, personality, talent, skills, and maturity. These all combined can help him extract positive outcomes of the work allotted by him/her to his/her subordinates.

What is leadership management


Through collaboration and co-operation of the leader and his team members, they can achieve their desired goals for themselves and their organization. For this, a leader solicits recommendations from his/her subordinates. If he/she finds the suggestions valid, then he/she implements them in the policies and plans of the organization. Thus, he/she can invite and entertain full support of his/her subordinates and that, in turn, they will provide the employees’ willingness to work correctly and efficiently. Therefore the company will run effectively, the targets will be met, and the goals will be achieved.

A leader as a friend, philosopher, and guide: A leader should have the three qualities of a friend, philosopher, and focus. A leader can be a friend to his/her subordinates by asking them and discussing their feelings, viewpoints, and interests. He/she can discuss their problems and give them the required solutions. He/she can be a philosopher by imparting his/her knowledge and experiences to the employees and inspiring them. He/she can be a guide by supervising their work progress, giving them hints and help to perform better, and providing training about the company’s plans and policies.

Leadership is known as the potential of a person to influence and motivate other people. He/she instills confidence and zeal among the employees towards their respective work. Leadership in management deals with values and ethics. They invest ethics and values in their followers to work positively towards the accomplishment of their goals. Leadership is the outcome of the leader’s personality, experience, motivation, deals, and ethics, etc. People need to have faith in their leader for better functioning of the management and the organization.
